She stood alone on the edge of the road, carved into the mountain. The scene recommended itself to sincerity with its tall pine trees and gray jagged rocks. The scene drew one’s eyes skyward, lost in the immensity of it all. She saw none of it. Tears clouded her vision. The deep lines on her forehead signaled dark looming thoughts. He was gone. He’d left while she slept..No note. No goodbye. She felt deep in the pit of her stomach he wouldn’t be returning. He was gone.
She dropped to her knees. Her shoulders heaving under the weight of tears that left her body shuddering, as if her heart were trying to purge itself of a love no longer there. She sat on her heels, dropped her head as she struggled for composure. Her attempted last two seconds. Lifting her head skyward she gave into the pain and screamed. Gut-wrenching cries carried away on the northeasterly winds.
